Mech Data

The term Mech comes from the word mechanized.  The most widely known use of the term mech is the BattleMech from FASA's Battletech. Likewise the term mecha came from Robotech.

Mechs can take many forms, but a general discription would be a large roughly human shaped robot, with a human pilot.  In the case Battletech and Robotech,  mech are about four stories tall, wear tough armor and carrier massive fire power.  The Mobil Suits of the Gundam series are the same, were as the Eva's of the Evangleon series are twice that size and are mainly melee fighters

Science fiction writers always imagined that robots would have arms and legs, just like people. Although the first industrial robots didn't look anything like what the seers predicted, a future generation of mechanical workers may come closer to their vision. And while they might not look like Robby the robot, they will stand on their own two legs.

As a result of improvements in motion-control technology and high-power hydraulics, the construction industry is likely to be the first to see the change in design, predicts a group of California engineers.

Cranes and high-steel workers could be replaced with all-purpose machines that operating engineers will control from aircraft-style cockpits.  Wheels and tracks will be replaced by bipedal locomtion systems, says Earle bishop, an engineer who works with Mechanical Propulsion Systems of Bakersfield, Calif. The result will be machines that resemble "mecha," the futuristic robots seen in Japanese animated films.

"Our current plans envision a fully completed and operational prototype mecha in a few years," Bishop tells Popular Mechanics.  "We see them as being adapted for uses in the commercial, industrial and defense arena.
